Puppy Insurance FAQs

At Everypaw, you can insure your puppy from 8 weeks of age. The ideal age to bring them home is typically between 8-12 weeks, so you could have cover organised before they arrive! Check out our advice on buying your first puppy for some useful tips.

Understanding what is and isn’t included in each policy is one of the first steps to choosing the right puppy insurance for you and your new best friend. A few of the main exclusions on our pet insurances include:

  • Treatment for any pre-existing conditions
  • Treatment for poisoning or any accidental injury that occurs in the first 3 days of your policy*
  • Treatment for any illness that occurs in the first 14 days of your policy*
  • Treatment related to vaccine-preventable conditions
  • Treatment on baby teeth if your pet is over 16 weeks when your policy starts

*Switching to Everypaw Pet Insurance? If you can prove your previous puppy insurance runs up to the policy start date, we can waive this for you.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of our exclusions. For more information, take a look at our policy document

While many breeds and crossbreeds can be eligible for puppy insurance cover, such as Beagles, Labradors, Jack Russells and Cockapoos, there are a number of exclusions:

  • We do not provide our £8k, £9k and £10k Lifetime cover for some breeds including but not limited to Anatolian Shepherd Dogs, Bulldogs, Giant Schnauzers, Neapolitan Mastiffs, Newfoundlands, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and Rottweilers.*
  • We do not provide cover for any puppy that must be registered under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 and/or the Dogs (Muzzling) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1991, or breeds such as American Bulldogs, Cane Corsos, Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs, Irish Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Pit Bull Terriers, and XL Bullies.*
  • For new policies bought from 1st July 2024, we do not provide Third Party Liability cover for certain breeds and crossbreeds, including Akitas, Portuguese Podengos, Seguguio Italianos, Shar Peis and Utonagans.*

*Please note that this is not a comprehensive list and there are other breed exclusions that you can find on our exclusions page.

Vaccinations aren't covered by our pet puppy insurance. It's super important that you book their vaccinations, though, as there are some nasty critters out there that can make for a poorly pup!

You'll need to keep up with their booster vaccinations, too. If you don't, you may not be covered should you need to make claim on your puppy insurance. Here's all you need to know about puppy vaccinations.

The total cost of puppy insurance is determined by several factors, including the type of cover, your pup's breed and where you live. It's a good idea to think about getting them insured as soon as possible, as puppies can be pretty adventurous, and accidents can happen.

For an accurate figure of how much puppy insurance costs, get a quote with us today.

We recommend puppy-proofing your home before introducing them to their new surroundings. When the big day arrives, don't forget a comfy dog carrier and a cosy blanket so they can chill out on the journey. And, of course, you're going to need snacks and water too.

Your puppy may feel a little nervous or scared at first. It can be emotional leaving their mum, so don't be worried if they have an accident or two on the way. Discover how to be the perfect paw-rent by reading our blog on looking after a puppy

It is a legal requirement that all puppies over 8 weeks old must be microchipped. Any claim you make will be rejected if you have not done this. Dog microchipping is a relatively simple process that your vet will be able to take care of and it typically costs in the region of £15, although your Everypaw Puppy Insurance won't cover this fee.

Your puppy should begin weaning when they're between six to eight weeks old, although some eager pups will be interested in solid food as early as three or four weeks. When you collect them at around eight to 12 weeks, your new pet should be entirely weaned and now on solids.

To start with, stick to puppy food formula. Your pup's teeth are small, so mash up the food until it's nice and easy for them to eat. Add a little water if you've gone for dry food. Avoid giving your dog raw meat, and don't let them eat scraps from the table - no matter how much they give you those puppy eyes!

Your new little friend has plenty of growing and playing to do, so they can be greedy! Try not to overfeed your hungry pupper. Keep careful track of their meals and be sure to stick to the following plan:

  • Four meals a day from two months to three months
  • Drop down to two to three meals a day between four and six months
  • When they're six months old, start giving them just two meals a day

Try not to mix and match their diet. Your puppy could end up with a runny bum. It's best to keep everything as consistent as possible.

Everypaw's Dog Food Guide can steer you in the right direction, as can our blog on when to switch your puppy to adult food.

Yes, our puppy insurance covers the cost of dental treatment as long as you can prove a history of annual check-ups (or as recommended by a vet) and that the treatment is to relieve suffering due to illness.

Routine dental treatment and check-ups are excluded. Also, treatment related to baby teeth if your pup is over 16 weeks old at the policy start date will not be covered. Learn more about puppy teeth and teething

Keeping your furry friend’s gnashers in tip top shape is important as otherwise it can lead to dog dental issues such as plaque build-up, bad breath and dental disease. Our guide to dog dental care will take you through everything you need to know about teeth cleaning and how to spot any potential problems.

When a puppy's got to go, they've got to go! You can start puppy toilet training as early as you like, set a designated spot for them and keep an eye on them.

Look out for the following signs, which could tell you your puppy needs to go:

  • Sniffing around for the perfect spot
  • Circling an area before squatting down

When you see your dog doing this, take them to their toilet spot and let them go. When they're done, give them plenty of praise or a tasty treat to reinforce their good behaviour.

If your pupper has an accident, don't shout or punish them as they won't understand what's happening. This is a learning curve with them, so be patient and keep at it! Simply clean the mess and keep up with the positive reinforcement when they go in the right place.

Tinkle time isn’t the only thing you’ll want to train your poochy pal on when you welcome them into your home. You can also learn more about how to crate train your puppy and how to teach your puppy to walk on a leash
