Exclusions to Our Pet Insurance for Cats

We know how important it is for you to find the most suitable insurance for your cat. We also know that a big part of being able to find the right policy is having a clear idea of what's not included. With that in mind, some of the main exclusions on our cat insurance policies are treatment for:

So, here are a few of the main exclusions on our pet insurances:

  • Treatment for poisoning or any accidental injury that occurs in the first 3 days of your policy*
  • Treatment for any cat illness that occurs in the first 14 days of your policy*
  • Treatment related to vaccine-preventable conditions
  • Treatment related to breeding, pregnancy or birthing
  • Treatment on baby teeth if your pet is over 16 weeks when your policy starts

Making a Claim on Your Cat Insurance

We hope you never need to claim on your policy. After all, we want your cat to stay strong and healthy just as much as you do! But if something does happen, making a claim is quick and easy with Vet Pawtal. With Vet Pawtal, your vet submits the claim so you can take the time to look after your cat.

If your vet doesn’t have access to Vet Pawtal, you can still submit the claim in the Pet Portal. If you’re not registered for the Portal, you can download a claim form and submit it following the instructions on the form, but this can take longer than submitting your claim online.

For more information, head to our Pet Insurance Claims information page.

Cat Insurance FAQs

Pet insurance for cats is not a legal requirement. And, of course, you can save money in the short term by going without it. But accidents, injuries and illnesses do occur – data from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) reveals there were 1.8 million pet claims in the UK in 2024.

So, if something were to happen to your cat, you could be left facing a hefty bill for the treatment. Taking out a cat insurance plan can offer that priceless peace of mind that your much-loved pet has the protection it deserves.

You can take out a new Everypaw Cat Insurance policy from your kitten turning 8 weeks old and we can provide pet insurance for older cats too. There's nothing to worry about, when we say lifetime, we mean lifetime.

Once you've taken out your policy and you have your Welcome Pack, you can get to know some Everypaw perks. For one, there's access to PawSquad's RCVS-qualified vets, a 24/7 video, audio and live chat service. If your little bundle of fluff isn't their usual bouncy self or if you need some parenting advice, the expert vet team is there for you and your cat 24/7 365 - 366 if it's a leap year.

Then there's the Pet Portal, your go-to digital hub to manage your cat insurance policy. Once you're registered, you can manage your preferences, update details and make claims. On top of that, Everypaw policies are jammed with features and benefits as standard. When we say we're here for your cat from kitten to cat-hood, we mean it.

Pet insurance for cats will cover vet fees for veterinary treatment, medication, and surgery up to the vet fee limit of your policy. So if your cat suffers an illness or injury, having insurance gives you the peace of mind their treatment will be covered. As well as treatment, their cover also includes benefits to help if they were ever to go missing and in the event of their passing away, for example.

You should also be aware that when you take out a policy, there will be a waiting period before you can make a claim. After 3 days you can claim if your cat suffers an injury or is poisoned, it just can't have happened in those first 3 days. After 14 days you can then claim for new illnesses, but it cannot be an illness they've suffered in the first 14 days. At the 14-day mark, the full range of policy benefits will be activated.

But if you switch to Everypaw from another provider, and your old policy runs up to your start date, we can waive the initial exclusion periods for you.

Like most other insurance providers, Everypaw does not cover pre-existing conditions.

If your cat prefers to stay curled up inside on the sofa with you, they're much less likely to go missing, get into a fight with another animal or be in danger of being hit by a car. But illnesses can still occur, as can accidents around the home. A cat insurance policy can help provide that little bit of peace of mind if the worst happens.

According to ABI, the UK's average pet insurance premium in 2024 was £389. But the cost of cat insurance varies for several reasons, like their age, their breed and where you live. Vets across the UK vary in price, so we factor this in too.

We understand that you consider the cost before taking out a policy; it has to be affordable to you in the end. And you must expect your premiums to go up every year – sometimes they can rise considerably. Taking this into account, go for protection that's right for you both. Don't just go for the cheapest cat insurance in an attempt to save a few pounds; weigh up your options first.

If you're happy with how much your cat insurance costs and you want to go ahead and begin your cover, you have two options when it comes to payment. You can pay for the whole year upfront or you can spread the cost over 12 monthly instalments. Either way, the price of your cover will remain the same. Some providers will add a finance fee when the premium is paid in instalments, but not Everypaw.

The cost of vaccinations and boosters is not covered by our cat insurance. And if your vet recommends a vaccination and you decide against it, you won't be covered if your cat then falls ill with a condition that could've been prevented by that vaccine.

From clawed curtains to mucky paw prints all over your brand-new carpet, cats' behaviour can be unpredictable – even for those who are usually little angels. As a result, we cannot offer a cat insurance policy for any damage your pet causes to your home.

If you’re welcoming a new furbaby into your home and want to protect your belongings while they find their feet (or paws), take a look at our tips for kitten-proofing your home

We offer insurance for your cat that covers the cost of dental treatment up to your vet fee limit. It can cover treatment for a dental condition, related condition, illness or accidental injury. You must have a history of annual check-ups and proof any vet advice given was followed within 6 months. Treatment related to baby teeth if they are over 16 weeks at the policy start date will not be covered.

As of 10th June 2024, it is a legal requirement to have your cat microchipped. Not doing so could result in a fine of up to £500. Cat microchipping is a simple process done by your vet and usually costs between £10 and £30, but this is not covered by our insurance for cats.

Your cat insurance will cover you for the price you paid for your pet if they are stolen or go missing and are not recovered within 30 days. If you don't have proof of payment, we'll cover you for the amount you stated when you started the policy or the market value of your cat – whichever is lower.

One important exclusion to note is that our insurance for cats does not provide cover if your pet goes missing or is taken within the first 14 days of the policy. However, if you do switch to Everypaw from another provider, and can prove your previous cover ended as soon as your new policy begins, we can waive this exclusion for you.

Everyone wants the best for their cat, but you do need to think of yourself and your pocket too. The best cat insurance doesn't have to be the most expensive or the most comprehensive, because they could be difficult to afford. But on the flip side, cheap cat insurance might not offer the level of cover you need. As with a lot of things in life, finding the right answer is all about balance.

Weigh up the needs of your pet with your needs and your knowledge about cat insurance and you should be on to a winner. You can try giving your cat's insurance some real-world perspective. If they were ever to have an accident, suffer a short illness, or pick up a long-term illness, how much assistance would you want with covering the related medical fees?

Put this into practice, and you should be able to find the insurance that works best for you both.
